Non-linear systems can be a pain to buy or sell because there are so many different configurations, board revision levels, accessories, software licenses, etc. The problems are that:

A video switcher requires you to laboriously time each camera input to the switcher using a waveform monotor and vectorscope. With a video mixer you just plug and play and forget about all that stuff. If the last sentence confuses you then you need a video "mixer" because it has magical frame syncs (click the "TBCs and Frame Sync" category for more on these) which takescare of all that for you. Mixers are handy for small traveling productions, churches and city council systems, or anywhere you need to set up a few cameras without a lot of fuss.
