| DV Camcorders Buyers: Good news -DV cams will be coming down in price with the introduction of low cost HD cams from Sony. Sellers: Bad News -Sony introduced (spring 05) an 3 chip HDV cam to the consumer and prosumer markets at between 3200 and 3600 bucks. Now I know it has limitations but look at what's happening here. HD at consumer prices. All you guys with XL-1s, PD 150s/170s and especially VX 1000 vintage cameras should look at discounting your 4:1:1 DV now if you really want to sell it. Consider the buyers for your gear; they have the option of choosing to buy a new HDV cam at 3600 clams or your DV used. What would you do? Price aggressively. Be open to offers. Include accessories as this tends to make your item stand out from the rest. Owners of Betacam cameras went through this in the last few years. They tried to hold out for top dollar and now there are a million Beta camcorders on the market and they've all lost 50% or more of their value over the last coupla' years and they continue to drop. Also it is a curious fact that as time goes on buyers of used equipment f ocus on one or two models that they will accept. If you do not have a popular unit (usually Sony) you are in trouble no matter how nice the camera is. Forget what you paid for it and consider what you can get for it now. | Betacam Camcorders Buyers: Good news, the price has dropped on many fine packages. Buyers: Beta or DV? Purists will tell you the picture is still better with Beta -and they are right. Beta really is a very fine format. For broadcast it is still the coin of the realm. Your editor will likely take in a componenet betacam signal and your results will always be fabulous. With all the packages flooding the market there are deals to be had. Consider also that the cameras that are attached are most likely quite a bit better than what you might get in a "Prosumer" or low end DV package for the same $$. Sellers: Prices have dropped. The buyers have changed. The bottom line is that people used to move up to Betacam from other formats -now they move over to DV because it is just so dang convenient and affordable. Also you are not the only one trying to sell off their Beta. You missed the boat on getting top dollar for these back before '01. If you try to hold out for top dollar now you will not sell it at all -i.e. be flexible. If you have a relatively recent camera (DXC 637 or newer) you might try selling it as a combo -otherwise break up the camera and deck. A BVV 5 on any camera is an albatross around any camera's neck (PVV-3s are more valuable now) and are not going to sell for more than 5-600 bucks unless they have new heads and have been recapped -even then you may only get another couple hundred bucks. You may, in the end, get stuck with it -don't let the camera get stuck too. If you happen to have lens controls and the large viewfinder, maybe even CCUs/multicore for the camera it will definitely sell better alone. Oddly there has been a small resurgence in UVW 100 sales and I'm not sure why. This is a nice little workhorse and not too expensive (avg. 2500-3500 sell price depending on condition.) It is expected that Beta camcorders will include a lens, tripod plate, small viewfinder and carrying case of any sort and perhaps the power supply or batt/chgr setup. | Video Cameras Multiple camera packages in studio config no matter how old (but not tubes) sell very well. NOTE Bad/weak pixels: Camera chips are culled to determine the level of bad or weal pixels; the clean ones go to broadcast cameras, the less so to ÒIndustrialÓ or ÒproÓ cameras. Some bad or weak pixels are within spec for Industrial cameras. HereÕs how to do a quick check on your camera: Record the folowing test as you do it. Cap the lens, crank the gain to the highest setting and look for dead or weak pixels. Mark them with a dry erase marker on the monitor. Then do the same with a white card and look for dark pixels. Mark these. If they are obvious and especially in the central part of the picture you may be hosed entirely as this requires replacement of the chip block for a coupla' grand. Now what do you do? Broadcast cameras and many Pro cameras have circuits that hide weak pixels. This is done at the factory but can be done in the privacy of your own home by black balancing the canera (some say do it a few times). Broadcast cameras can be sent to Roger Macie or Lucke to be Pixel Compensated with magical computer algorityms. Industrial cameras that do not hide bad pixels when black balanced need the chip block replaced. Dead or weak pixels in a broadcast camera are grounds for return unless they are noted beforehand. As a buyer, if you are trying to buy an industrial camera without any weak or bad pixels be forewarned, you probably will not find these and we will NOT keep sending you cameras until you find a perfect one. | Lenses People often ask what the numbers mean on a lens. This is good info to know. Luckily the most important thing -the wide angle and zoom ratio- is expressed the same way by virtually all manufacturers. In a number like 15x9 the 9 is the wide angle (9mm) . If you multiply the 9 by the 15 you get135mm at the telephoto end of the zoom. Another callout that is important is the ÒIÓ (Canon) or the ÒEÓ (Fuji) which calls out a 2X extender effectively doubling the lenses telephoto setting, i.e. at full zoom on the lens in the example youÕd be at 270mm telephoto with the extender engaged. Most often youÕll see a ÒBÓ right after the numbers and that calls out a ÒbayonetÓ mount usually for a Sony (B4) or compatible camera. The first letter calls out the imager size -2/3 on a broadcast/EFP camera -1/2 or smaller on midsized and prosumer cams. Most 2/3 inch cameras now use the B4 mount. You may have to be careful to be sure the cable connector is the right one for your camera. All the stuff at the end has to do with zoom, focus and servo and more. See the Canon nomenclature chart and Fuji nomenclature chart which for unknown reasons never tell you all the possible callouts. Two other common questions: Can I put a 2/3 Ò lens on a 1/2 inch camera? Sure but now your lens delivers a more telephoto image because the 2/3 image is bigger than the 1/2 in chip. Can I put a standard def lens on an HD cam? Some people do and report that it works anywhere between crappy and just fine. Expect to see some vingetting (darker in the corners) and some chromatic abberation (rainbows again in the corners). OK, one more thing: backfocus. If you donÕt know what this is and have never made a backfocus adjustment you may be in for a pleasant (and free!) surprise. Go get this chart and print it out on a laser or hi res printer and follow the instructions. This adjustment makes certain that the focal plane of the lensÕs image lays exactly on the surface of the imager (your camera chips). | Batts and Chargers Would you buy a used battery? I didn't think so. They just are not worth much. NMH batts were kind of an "interim" battery format and were not as good on life cycle as NiCad or Li-Ion -both opf those had problems though. NiCads have been phased out in most countries due to the toxic cadmium they contain (not here though) and the Li-Ions have historically been expensive. The NMH were developed in anticipation of the ban and provided similar performance to the NiCads at a little less weight, much less memory effect and lower cost than LiIon. LiIon was expected to come down and be the big dog of the battery world and now taht's retty much happened. Michelle at IDX who knows these things and she filled me in on more techie factors. NMH batts get 250 charge cycles and generally a year -maybe two. They don't like to sit around not charged; they have a high self discharge and if they sit, they discharge so much they get below the min voltage that a charger will even recognize 'em. Give 'em a proper burial and chalk it up to experience There is nothing official about 12V power supplies! I.e., virtually any one will do as long as it is not too wimpy. They should be well regulated but if it was made for pro video it will be. Most old style portable decks are looking for 12-25 watts -most cameras/camcorders will want at least 40W as you may throw a light on it. Most supplies will do 60W in any case (you are always OK with more than the device is rated -true evil will result with less). Just about any supply from any manufacturer that has the 4pin XLR (pretty standard on most) will do. You have to be careful buying used as people tend to sell the supply but keep the 4pin XLR -and a replacement cable can cost 60 bucks or more! New power supplies have the advantage of being very light weight, small and cool running. An IDX IA60 ( a really popular power supply) spits out a healthy 60 Watts, is about the size of a paperback, comes with the cable and I sell them at $275. And when your old unit craps out you can use the IA60 to power any modern camcorder from a Digibeta on down to a pro-DV. You should be aware that some chargers will charge batteries and power your deck (and camera, and light). An IDX JL2Plus will charge (2) NP1 style batteries and has a 60W power supply built in at a mere $375 -not much more than a power supply alone and the thing is still light and small. The best thing about it though is that it will charge NiCads, NiMH and Lithium-Ion batteries. You can even buy and adapter that will adapt the charger to fit the new V-mount style batteries. If you already have the newer V-mounts on your gear then the VL2 Plus is a 2 banger that runs $535.
