| DigiBeta Demystified! First, the BTS/Bosh/Philips are the same machines as the Sonys -just with a re-engineered logo! They sell for less so if you donÕt need to impress anyone with a Sony logo, save a buck or two. There is a great deal of confusion about Sony's model numbers and what they mean. There is also a bit of confusion on hour readings. Let's clear things up! DVW 500 and DVW A 500 models are recorders. DVW 510 and DVW A 510 models are players. The "A" in the DVW A500 or DVW A510 means they will play (not record) analog Betacam tapes. A "P" after the model means it's PAL. Tip: you can save big buying a "non-A" version and simply play Betacam tapes on your existing Betacam decks. To make matters more confusing, either recorder (DVW 500, DVW A500) can come with an A505 composite input card that allows analog composite input to the deck (without the card, they have only component analog and digital inputs.) Look for the board inside with the DEC 65 designation (Why the A-505 board is a DEC65 I can't tell ya.) Be aware that, though you may have a composite input connector, it is non-functional without the A-505 board! Tip: if you only occasionally need to get a composite source into the recorder, forget the A505 card (save a couple grand) and use an NTSC decoder (cheap used) or a transcoding frame sync (about a grand) to go to analog component (R-y, B-Y, Y) then into the recorder; A quality frame synch will do a fine job of NTSC decode and it is a handy device to have around anyway. Now to hours. First, for some totally unknown reason, hours displayed on the deck's control panel readout are 10 times less than the readout you'll see on a monitor through the superimpose output. So you must always ask/tell where the hours are being read froman expressed as after times 10! From the Sony service manual: H01 Operating = accumulated hours when the power of the unit is on; H02 Drum Rotate = accumulated hours when the drum rotates in the threading end state (i.e. tape is loaded and threaded and drum is rotating -ready for action!); H03 Tape Running Hours = accumulated hours when the tape runs in FF, RW, PLAY, SEARCH, REC and Edit modes (not including STILL mode) (i.e. itÕs how many hours tape has been touching the head while tape is moving) and H04 = Accumulated number of threading and unthreading times (i.e. how many times a tape has been put in and out (i.e. how many times the loading mechanism has been activated -a measure of wear on the mechanism). If the meters were reset when heads were replaced then H12 (drum spinning,) H13 (tape on head,) and H14 (threads) will show you accumulated hours on the new parts. Ops and threads will obviously be unchanged from 0x readings. The H0_ numbers should be larger numbers than the H1_ numbers if a head's been replaced. Look for a "-R" on the upper drum's label to determine if heads have been replaced. Be aware that resetting the hour meter actually costs money and many people opt not to reset them. These sellers will need to document a recent (less than a year) head replacement or accept that no one will believe them about hours. If the deck is older it may have Psycho Meter Syndrome. If the hour meter is telling you impossible things, say 200 ops hours and 25000 drum hours, then the deck has an early hour meter circuit with a flaw and you will have no way to tell what the real hours are. The price of the deck goes down as if it had very high hours because no one will believe your hour guesses unless you can, again, document them sufficiently. A note on pricing: Digis have dropped considerably, and the range of prices has broadened. Low hour, high serial number A500 w 505 rarely sell over $20K. Low serial number A500 without A505 with high or unknown hours can sell as low as $10K US -quite a spread! Recommendation: Digis in the US will only drop further and there are a gazillion of them on the market. If you are not using them, sell them now for what you can get. | $ For Sale | |||

| HDTV With new cameras just itching to come out of Japan at lower prices with more features -including switchable ones from Panasonic look to many cameras incorporating some HD functionality as standard by '04 NAB. The big ones like the Cine Alta are still just astounding. If you are a nature or documentary creator note that where content has a timeless value, i.e. nature, history, medical, etc shooting in HD gives your product more shelf life. Discovery now accepts only a small percentage of shows in 4:3 NTSC. Buyers: be aware that prices will continue to drop on new HDTV offerings. Pay attention to the scuttlebutt on new product announcements. Sellers: Ditto. Look at turning your equipment often to maximize the used price you'll get. | $ For Sale | |||

| Sony J-H1 with the iLink Board, which is a perfect 10/10 aesthetically and mechanically (Op 518, Drum 295, Tape Run 208) as it is a deck we bought new for location digitizing and playback on one project that recently finished. Does not do 24P. The J-H1 has no control interface, but the addition of the iLink card really transforms it - not so much because it allows you to capture video in DV with audio over firewire (which is nice for off-lines and fast location grabs) but more because it allows you to control the deck with frame accuracy using the firewire cable, and then capture your video and audio in true HDCam from the regular outputs, which turns this little rascal into a really nice feeder deck for editing (and it is perfect to pop into a flight case and have both options available to you on location). The serial # is 10409. | 1 | $ For Sale | ||

| Betacam Betacam, the workhorse of the last decade, has been diving in price. People used to move up to Betacam but now move over to DV. Still the Beta offers superior pictures and will be around for quite a while. Buyers: Virtually all the hour meters are dead on Betacams now and prices have dropped due to uncertainties about when you might need a new head. You should plan on a head replacement within a year in any case. Also look for the 10-20% lower market price on BTS (BCB) and Ampex (CVR) logo'd machines -they are exactly the same as the Sonys (all made in the same factory even!) Sellers: If the hour meter actually works look to see if the hours are x10 -meaning that the hours you get on the meter must be mutiplied by 10, ex.100 hours = 1000. It should be marked on the deck but check the destruction manual. Drum hours are most important. Please get us hours if you can. Dead meters mean lowest market price. | $ For Sale | |||

| Disk Recorders These would be your hard disk or recordable Laserdisc systems. Still Stores are in their own category. This category has a wide variety of old and new product. It is hard to say what market price will be on many of these items because they do not come up for sale very often. Older units will probably be bought by someone with a similar unit looking to either add one to the arsenal or to cannibalize parts from. Newer DV disk recorder units will hold some value within a year or two of purchase but then new, bigger, faster, cheaper units will keep the used prices down a bit. Seller and buyer should both be open to a bit of negotiation on both old and new items. | $ For Sale | |||

| Frame Synch/TBCs & Timecode A TBC is a miraculous device. Quite simply the signal coming off a piece of plastic tape with iron filings on it, passing over a wildly spinning head at some thousands of RPM is going to be, well, just a wee bit unstable. For this reason a tape deck's signal cannot be directly mixed with more well behaved devices such as cameras and CGs. A TBC is a big video bucket that tells the tape deck (by sending an "advanced sync" signal back to the deck) to speed up or slow down so the bucket is always nearly full. There is a spigot at the bottom of the bucket that lets the video out at a nice "clock steady" rate all nice n' legal for mixing. TBC's also do another nice function by way of an onboard proc amp. This circuit strips off the sync parts of the incoming video signal (which are just as goofed up as the video) and replaces them on the output with nice spiffy clean sync. This is why you should always do dubs -especially of older or multigeneration tapes- through a TBC. The proc amp also gives you some control over video level, hue (aka tint), chroma (aka color) and brightness (aka pedestal.) This from reader Vinnie Novak: TBC's and Frame Syncs usually delay the video by a few frames. Enough frames to put the audio out of lip-sync. Buyers may also want to purchase an Audio Delay device (or make the talent talk slower). (Just kidding). UsedTBCs almost universally go between 250 to 500 bucks. Frame Syncs ($500-$1500) on the other hand are like TBCs on steroids. Remember we had to send a signal back to the tape deck to speed it up or slow it down? Well what if you couldn't do that. Say you had a consumer tape deck or a satellite (hard to send a reference cable 24,000 miles into space now isn't it?) Well ,very broadly put, a Frame Sync is just a big enough bucket that it will always hold a full frame of video. If the video comes in too slow or too fast it will just hold the last good frame until things settle down. Normally no one notices a frame or two but you can see frame syncs in action from time to time during a fast camera pan as in football coverage where the picture freezes a few times as the runner is heading downfield. You can plug anything into a frame sync and it will always give you clock steady video. Great for dubbing and cleaning up unplayable tapes. For extra fun, most Frame Syncs also "transcode " between formats; i.e. you put in composite, component, YC or RGB and get any/all of those out. The proc amp controls are still there too -making a frame sync a much more useful device than a TBC. That's why you pay more for them. Buyers: great bang for the buck. | $ For Sale | |||
