Ikan offers a rather interesting and innovative set of useful products. Ikan had been making LCD field monitors for a while and has recently added the popular Cinemage and Ruige lines of high end field and studio monitors. But Ikan also makes camera accessories, follow focus units, camera mounting devices for DV and DSLR cams, teleprompters(!) and an assortment of gear bags.
Here we feature Ikan's innovative LED lighting. Those of us who started ages ago with Lowell kits are pretty amazed at how far lighting technology has come. We were even more impressed with the new LED technology after we tested the Ikan ID500-KIT LED 3 light kit.
The kit comes with three lights, 3 stands and bags for both. The stands are thicker than the old Lowell stands, adjust up to 9 feet high and have integral springs in the columns so your light will have a soft landing if you don't tighten things down quite right.
The lights are very solidly built and thoughtfully designed -more, perhaps, than you might expect for a $1699 List Price kit (call for Uncle Geo's price!). Each light also comes with a small wireless remote that turns the light on or off, selects four preset light levels or allows continuously variable dimming. The rear of the light body also has switches for each of four light banks and a dimmer control.
Four barn doors are integral to the light and the two long barndoors each have two handy clips for gels. The mount has a large twist handle for adjustment and secures to the stand with a 5/8" baby stud. The mount can connect to three of the sides so it can be mounted in either horizontal or vertical mode. Neither the LEDs nor the housing emitted any discernable heat after two hours making it perfect for a small contained studio. From the standard 4pin XLR power connection the LEDs consume only 30W of power which comes from the included AC power supply or, with an optional bracket, AB or V mount batteries.
The ID500 is 2.55Klux/50cm and 5600K but they make a ID1000-KIT that doubles brightness and the iLED 312-KIT with variable 3200K - 5600K temp at 6580 lux/50cm. Lights can also be purchased individually.
